Requirement for Data Specific Services: All customers
who wish to receive services where valued information is to be managed by Apex
Information Services must have a complete backup.
|
|
"For most folks at home, a complete backup of all data to a
separate hard disk drive works well and can be setup, tested and documented with
service report and instruction for between $300 and $600 (depending on system
configuration and quantity of data) by Apex Information Services.
Further backups to DVD and archiving are also advisable so as to keep the most
critical information in a safety deposit box or elsewhere in case of total
office calamity."
Important Issues to Address with Home Use:
1.) Archive of digital camera photos, music, video,
documents and banking/tax information not backed up.
Solution: Have data synchronized with other computers and
automatically backed up to external hard disk drive on a daily basis.
Archive photos, music and video to DVD and secure in a separate physical
location away from home office.
2.) Disparity of information between laptop and desktop.
Solution: Avoid storing any data at laptop and use laptop
as terminal to a desktop (Windows Remote Desktop or
www.GoToMyPc.com) and/or synchronize data
between laptop and desktop over home network using either Microsoft SyncToy or
folder synchronization as built into Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista
Business.
3.) Increased use of PC for recording television programming
of which results in overloading PC.
Solution: If recording TV programming using Media Center,
choose to have programming recorded to second external or internal hard disk
drive and do not bother backing up this drive. This way, the primary C:
drive will not fill and result in a stall of the PC or create issues when
attempting to backup the C drive. Will help extend the life of the primary
C: drive.
4.) Overheating and premature physical failure of PC as a
result of dust/dander build up and improper placement of desktop computer in
hutch or cabinet.
Solution: If possible, keep PC off of carpeted floor and
away from shaggy cats and dogs. Use airflow filter and/or routinely have
inside of power supply and PC case taken outdoors and blown free of debris using
high velocity dry air (vacuum cleaner set to run in reverse or electric leaf
blower). Keep back of cabinet open to air and possibly include cooling
fans in or near hutch or cabinet.
5.) Improperly configured security software, security
software overloading PC, unsecured wireless network and insecure methods of
working with online banking and online shopping.
Solution: Do not install the latest Norton Internet
Security suite on a PC more than 3 years old. Avoid installing multiple
security suites. As security software of which is constantly
monitoring events, only use antivirus, personal firewall software.
Currently recommend McAfee as provided for free by Comcast rather than Norton
Internet Security. If necessary, have additional memory installed.
Do not use personal name for name of wireless network and use security key to
access wireless. If possible, choose to use a Mac with financial software
and performing online banking. If using a PC with financial software and
online banking, only allow trusted individuals to use PC and keep security
software up to date.
6.) Too many programs running at startup resulting in a slow
performing PC, excessive junk E-mail, repeated problems with E-mail computer
viruses.
Solution: Visit
www.windowsstartup.com so as to download and install the Windows Startup
Inspector then trim off unwanted programs. Install, update and run
SpyBot, Adaware and Spyware Blaster so as to remove and prevent advertisement
based software from running at PC. Uninstall programs not used through
Add/Remove programs. Do not download E-mail messages to PC and instead make good
use of a web based mail service such as
www.gmail.com or
www.hotmail.com of which provide excellent spam filters. Best
recommended web mail services is www.gmail.com
for storage, spam filters and forwarding and other messaging options to include
PDAs.
If you call Geek at Best Buy, the person who you
finally speak with over the phone (if you are fortunate enough to do so) in
almost all cases---is not the person who will visit your home or business.
If you do call, there is the chance the
dispatcher will send you "Jimmy" or "Skip" from the local high school who both
received an A- in mathematics rather than---a computer consultant licensed since
1996 with 20+ years
computing experience and 3 college degrees.
For a mature, serious, home grown to
Puget Sound, self-employed, beyond geek consultant---Call Ed Siemion for computer help and
have someone who will provide solid solutions for home and business.
